About Us Roll up for a Magical Mystery Tour with RUBBER SOUL, Hawaii's All Beatles Band. Experience the feelings, the memories, and the joys as Rubber Soul performs the music of The BEATLES with an authentic sound, original instruments, and apparel representative of the year 1964. Formed in 1991, Rubber Soul hit Hawaii's music scene and quickly became a sensation at special events throughout the state. With the addition of James Roberts in 1995, the lineup of the band was solidified.
The band rocked on through the latter part of the nineties performing shows as diverse as beach parties and black tie gala events, to corporate conventions and weddings. From Grand Opening celebrations to charity fundraisers, baby luau's to Golden anniversaries, Rubber Soul rocked out of the millenium leaving a trail of satisfied Beatlemaniacs in its wake.
In 2000 Rubber Soul landed the coveted gig at the Texas Rock and Roll Sushi Bar in Waikiki's Hyatt Regency Hotel, a venue that seemed to be tailor-made for the band. Alas though, nothing lasts forever and the bar made its last sushi roll in April 2001. But Rubber Soul was not to be denied and quickly secured a spot at Harry's Bar in the Hyatt's Main courtyard. 2002 finds the band continuing its schedule of special events while performing two nights per week at Harry's Bar and two times per month (or more) at Hawaii's most memorable memorabilia shop, the Rock Island Cafe in King's Village!

About Fred:
Doctor Fred was bourne and bred in Iowa. Needing more vowels in his life, he relocated to Hawai`i as 9 months a year of cold weather really frostbites. Weaned on original rock and roll such as Bill Haley, Buddy H., and Little Richard, trained in Elvis and Jerry Lee, the true illumination was hearing "Meet the Beatles." Using a guitar and four chords, he got through too much school, but had too much fun finding the inner light, swelling on Beatles, Doors, the Dead, and lots of country rock. The greatest music ever written and possible to play thousands of times without needing serious psychiatric care is the Beatles. And having the opportunity to raise a smile on so many faces is like channeling from the Flaming Pie. Eat on!!

About Phil:
Phil was born in 1966 in Lansing Michigan, around the time the Beatles were revolutionizing popular music with their groundbreaking album, Revolver. The world would never be the same (because of the Beatles).
It has been said that people are most attracted to the music that was being made around the time of their birth. Phil is no exception as the Beatles' middle period is his favorite, and the song "Rain", which was being recorded around the time of his birth date, typifies this period and is his favorite Beatle song to this day. In fact, it could be said that Phil was born under the horoscope sign of "Rain" because his disposition is that of a dark, brooding, and cynical northerner - but he says "I don't mind ... the weather's fine."
Phil's first musical sacrament came in 1976, on the day his father brought home two 8 track tapes, the Beatles 1962-66 and 1967-70 from a garage sale. Phil had heard most of the songs on the radio for as long as he could remember, but was surprised that these diverse songs were all by the same band. He was hooked for life and bought his first guitar and Beatles album (Magical Mystery Tour) soon after.
Unfortunately for Phil, Beatles music was not cool amongst his friends, and it proved too complicated for a beginning 10 year old guitarist, so he went through a dark period of listening to the more managable music of KISS and other hard rock acts of the era. He still liked the Beatles, but kept it a secret out of fear that his hard rock friends would think he was a wuss.
Then one day, to his horror, one of his mates barged into his room as he was listening to "the Fool on the Hill". He was relieved when he came out of his Beatles Anxiety Closet, and his friend admitted that it was "kind of catchy", before demanding to listen to "Cat Scratch Fever" which he said is "real music". Still, he never lived this one down as his friends started teasing him incessantly thereafter by taunting him sarcastically with "hey Phil, let's go mellow out and listen to the Beatles."
After that Phil went through various phases: classic rock, new wave, punk, college / alternative rock, grunge, and finally jazz and classical (which he studied in college). He played in a college rock band called "Johnny with an Eye" which went on to superstardum as the Verve Pipe. The Verve Pipe enjoyed an RCA record contract, MTV videos, touring with KISS, writing songs with XTC and Andy Partridge, and a Billboard #2 chart-topping song (#1 on MTV), all after Phil had left the band.
Phil was left as one of the world's most famous "has beens," on par with Pete Best. But he swallowed his pride and opened a bar called "Almost Famous" where he tried to cash in on his association with "The Verve Pipe". The business was a failure and just as he was about to declare bankruptcy, he got a call from Fred Goldblatt, the founder of Rubber Soul. Fred said "we need a George." Phil said "Sorry, but my name is Phil." Then Fred clarified that they needed someone "to Phil the George part." Finally, Phil got it, and accepted the offer. He was elated because he had realized his life long dream of becoming a rock star. Well... kind of.

About Carsten:
Carsten Vogel was born in New York, New York in June of 1977. Shortly thereafter he moved to Hawaii where he was raised by loving parents and a few rabid dogs who still enjoy surprising him at gigs whenever they get the chance. Carsten was first introduced to the Beatles as a young boy through his parents' record collection and has been a fan ever since. He has a BS (Born Shipper) in psychology from Ohio Wesleyan and a JD (Just Doin' it) from the University of Hawaii's Richardson Law School. The highlights of his musical career include being dismissed from his grade school choir and his college jazz band for misbehaving. He is also proud of being a member of the record breaking band "The Howling Moondogs," an offshoot of Johnny and the Moondogs out of Liverpool, who broke the world record for the longest rock and roll performance in history - lasting forty two hours. He considers his most recent musical accomplishment to be performing regularly with "Rubber Soul," Hawaii's All-Beatles Band. | | |
